Chapter Eleven
Act as if nothing had happened? Had he really suggested she should act as if nothing had happened? When you had just experienced something so wonderful you felt as though the earth had moved off its axis, how could you possibly act as if nothing had happened? She looked up at the night sky. She hadnât noticed before that radiant full moon smiling down at them, or the velvet black sky full of twinkling silver stars. Were they shining even brighter tonight than they usually did? She was sure they were.
Charlotte took Nicholasâs arm and almost skipped up the path as they made their way back towards the house. She couldnât keep an insane smile off her face. She wanted to dance, to sing, to shout out to the world that she had just reached a level of ecstasy she had not imagined possible. Her body was certainly singing. She felt like a different woman, more alive than she had ever felt before, and every inch of her skin was still tingling from Nicholasâs touch. Instead of returning to the house she wanted to drag him back behind the trees, to beg him to caress her again, to do what he had just done, to give her that exquisite thrill one more time.
But he had insisted they return to the house and act as if they had merely had a small tiff which they had now settled. She clung on to his arm more tightly and put her head on his shoulder, wanting to absorb as much of his touch as she could, to be as close to this magnificent man as it was possible to be.
The only small niggling doubt that was clouding her otherwise sunny disposition was the thought that that might be it. Nicholas had given her a taste of what intimate pleasure between a man and a woman could be like, but he had been adamant that there would be no more. There would be no consummation. He would not ruin her chances of marriage, despite her protestations. It was almost worth marrying Nicholas herself to get what she wanted.
She stumbled slightly as they walked up the steps, causing Nicholas to look down at her with concern. âAre you all right, Charlotte?â
She nodded, no longer smiling like a demented fool. Where had that thought come from? She did not want to marry anyone and she certainly did not want to marry Nicholas. Yes, what she had experienced was earth shattering. And, yes, she would like to experience it again and again, and again, but was it something she would sacrifice her freedom for? She looked up at Nicholas, who smiled down at her in reassurance.
It was tempting. Oh, so tempting. To spend every night in this manâs arms had to be the very definition of temptation. But he was a rake. She had always known that. That was one of the reasons she had been so attracted to him in the first place, because she thought he would have no objections to seducing an eighteen-year-old virgin.
